Nikon Z9 launch: What Nikon means by 'a D3 moment' (and why it needs one)

All images by DPReview In our conversations with Nikon representatives, one phrase has come up again and again: 'A D3 moment'. The company is hoping that the new Z9 will have the same impact on the mirrorless Z-mount lineup as the D3 did for its DSLRs. But what exactly does a 'D3 moment' mean? Picture this: Nikon is on the back foot. The company's traditional dominance of the high-end camera market has been steadily eroded, with the biggest threat coming from a hungry competitor with a reputation for technical innovation and rapid iteration. Nikon – a company once synonymous in the camera world with the word 'professional' – is at risk of appearing out of date, and out of step with a new and more demanding generation of photographers, tempted by flashy new technologies on offer elsewhere. But all that is about to change; at least that's what Nikon executives hope. And now, in the sweltering Tokyo heat, the company's leaders, engineers and m

Canon announces PowerShot PX: AI-powered camera automatically captures photos and videos

Earlier this year, Canon announced an experimental new camera, the Canon PowerShot PICK. The crowdfunded camera uses AI to analyze a scene, identify people, track their faces and pick the perfect moment to capture an image. It's an 'automatic shooting camera,' basically, and it leverages Canon's extensive history with optical design, video processing and artificial intelligence technology. Now, Canon has unveiled the PowerShot PX . The new PX is based on the PICK and uses facial recognition and auto-subject search technology to capture photos and videos automatically. Canon Europe calls the PowerShot PX 'Your own personal photographer.' The idea is that with the PowerShot PX, you no longer need to stop enjoying your time with people to pull out your phone because the PowerShot PX works automatically. Like the PICK, the PowerShot PX can pan and tilt to track subjects. It moves 340 degrees (170 degrees left and right) horizontally and 110 degrees (-20 d

Film Friday: This pink, hand-painted Leica M4 celebrates Japan’s national flower, the cherry blossom

Japan Camera Hunter has revealed its latest one-off repainted Leica cameras in honor of JCH’s 10th anniversary. As noted by Kosmo Foto , the Sakura-themed Leica M4 has been hand-painted by Kanto, a specialist camera restorers based in Tokyo, Japan. The color and imagery is inspired by Japan’s national flower, the ornamental cherry blossom, known as Sakura. This is the fourth one-off camera Japan Camera Hunter has created and was preceded by a Kintsugi-inspired Leica M3 , a Mondrian-styled Leica PM2 and a Leica M4-P imprinted with quotes from George Orwell’s ‘1984’ novel. Bellamy Hunt, founder of Japan Camera Hunter, told Kosmo Foto ‘This [camera] was a surprise for me. I basically gave Kanto a blank sheet and told them to do something special. And they really did.’ Hunt continued: ‘We actually had a bit of a headache for finding something to relate this to. As Sakura season is in the spring. But then we found that there is winter Sakura and we found a shrine nearby

Photopea 5.2: The free, browser-based image editor now has color space support, noise reduction filter and more

Photopea , a web-based photo and graphics editor akin to Adobe Photoshop and GIMP , has released its 5.2 update, bringing with it a collection of new and improved features, including color profile support, a CMYK mode, a noise reduction filter and more. While the capabilities of Photopea are sparse compared to the likes of Adobe Photoshop, its ability to run from almost any browser on nearly any desktop device makes it an appealing offer, especially since it’s free to use. This latest update makes it even more enticing thanks to the ability to detect the color space inside a file (PSD, JPG, PNG, etc.) and render that image in the correct color space within the browser. Photopea’s creator, programmer Ivan Kutskir of the Czech Republic, explains in the version 5.2 announcement post that the color space is maintained throughout editing and is saved with the image. You can also start new documents from scratch in the newly-supported color spaces. Of course, in order to noti

3-way wireless microphone test with Rode, Saramonic and Synco dual-transmitter kits

If you’ve ever tried to record yourself or someone else talking via your in-camera microphones or with a mic in the hotshoe of your camera you will appreciate that neither of those two methods deliver the quality we are used to hearing on a TV show. On a basic level there is one principle reason your distant mutterings don’t resonate with clarity and a full range of tones, and that is that microphones on the camera are just not close enough to where the sound is coming from. The closer you put the microphone to the mouth of the speaker the more likely it is to pick up the intended voice without the distractions of all the other ambient sounds in the environment, whether that’s traffic, the chatter of by-standers, the rustling leaves, the hum of the air conditioner or just the echo of the target voice in the room. The three wireless microphone systems under the spotlight here are designed to solve exactly that problem by getting their pick-ups as close to the source as possible,

What you need to know about the new Nikon Z9

Hands-on with the new Nikon Z9 The Nikon Z9 has just been officially unveiled, and there is a lot to unpack in Nikon's first truly 'professional' mirrorless interchangeable camera. We had the chance recently to shoot with a pre-production sample of the Z9, and we've prepared some initial impressions of its handling and performance. Click through this article to get an idea of how we feel about the Z9 so far, and an overview of its key features. New stacked-CMOS sensor The most important feature of the Z9 is a newly-developed 45.7MP stacked-CMOS sensor. And make no mistake: While the pixel count is the same as the sensor in the Z7, Z7 II and the D850, this is an all-new Nikon-developed chip, which offers serious performance improvements that translate through to several areas of the Z9's feature set. In sheer image quality terms, we expect the Z9 to offer broadly comparable results for still imaging as the Z7/II at most ISO sensitivity settings. Des

New IPTC metadata standards improve accessibility for visually impaired individuals

The International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) hopes to make photos more accessible for people with disabilities, including vision impairment. New IPTC Photo Metadata Standards include a pair of new properties to allow screen reading software to describe visual content. The new properties are Alt Text (Accessibility) and Extended Description (Accessibility). Photographers and editors can embed detailed descriptions into image metadata, which can be accessed and read by screen reading software. By embedding accessible image descriptions into metadata, the accessibility-friendly information can follow an image across all electronic publications. IPTC writes: 'Web accessibility is mission-critical in our digitally inclusive age. As the number of images added to the web increases every day, the visual gap widens for people using assistive technologies, especially if they are blind. Embedding image descriptions for accessibility into photo metadata promises to be a

Samyang 135mm T2.2 VDSLR gets the MK2 upgrade with new iris and design

Lens manufacturer Samyang has given its 135mm cine lens the MK2 treatment, adding weather sealing, a new iris and the design characteristics of the company’s VDSLR MK2 series. The introduction of the Samyang 135mm T2.2 VDSLR brings the MK2 series to a total six focal lengths spanning 14mm to 135mm. This new upgrade comes with a seal on the rear mount to create a weather-proof barrier between the lens and the camera, as well as a new 9-bladed iris that the company claims produces 18-point sun stars when closed down. The other new feature of this MK2 version is a design that positions the distance and aperture scales on the sides of the barrel to make life easier when the camera is mounted above chest height. The full frame lens measures 12.2cm/4.8in in length, weighs between 866.4g/1lb 14oz and 918.2g/2lbs, takes a 77mm filter and will be available in mounts for Canon EF, Sony E, Nikon F, Canon M, Fuji X and MFT systems. The lens will ship early December and wil
